University of Birmingham Archery Club

Home

Welcome, weary traveller of the Internets, to the home of the University of Birmingham Archery Club (UBAC). Take a seat, put your feet up, and help yourself to a biscuit (the chocolate HobNobs are excellent).

Also/previously known as the Birmingham University Toxophily and Toucan Society (BUTTS), the archery club has been around for quite a while — long enough that the local university league is named after us. The toucan has long been the club mascot, as anyone who joins us is sure to find out!

We embrace any student or staff member at the university who wants to shoot, or shoot and drink, though strictly in that order. Hopefully this site should tell inquisitive minds (or those that are here by accident) anything they need to know about us as well as providing information on competitions and events that are to come.

You are warned that archers are all somewhat eccentric, probably too much time spent sniffing cement when repairing arrows and whatnot.

Spring Term Competitions

Published: 7th February 2011

The third leg of the BUTTS League was held on Saturday 4th February, with Birmingham competing at Derby University. The experienced team shot 2209, their second-best score since records began, giving them a rare win on the day at Derby and a third place finish amongst all eight teams. The team was made up of Jack Bryant, Sarah Russell, Paul Griffin and Zoe Hawken. Both Jack and Sarah won gold medals with their scores of 570 and 557 respectively. Overall, Birmingham still sit in sixth place but are separated from third place Nottingham by only two league points with our home leg and the Indoor Championships still to come.

The novice team (Allan West, Eloise Cornish, Andrew Cottrel and Alice Fawdrey) likewise took first place at Derby and third amongst all teams, scoring 1967, with medals going to Allan, Andrew and Eloise (GR gold, GR silver and LR bronze respectively). The novice team still holds the top spot overall, but Loughborough are close behind with 20 points to Birmingham’s 21.

E-League results for December-January have also been released – Birmingham A retain seventh place in Division 1 while the novice A team hold on to their Division 1 lead against stiff competition from Edinburgh and Warwick. In individual results, Allan West and Lewis Clarke hold the top two spots in the Novice Male Recurve League and Eloise Cornish is second in the Novice Female Recurve League. Top rankings amongst experienced archers in their respective disciplines are Jack Bryant (15th), Zoe Hawken (8th), Jos Sarsby (5th), Chris Tombe (3rd) and Hannah Lake (2nd).
