University of Birmingham Archery Club

Committee

As you will learn early on in archery, most archers are a bit… different. Some are more “different” than others, and they usually end up on the committee (it’s the safest place for them).

With that in mind, allow us to introduce the 2011–12 UBAC committee:

Captain: Paul Griffin

Lord Supreme Councillor, Protector of Toucans, Slayer of Dragons, Dispeller of Demons, Guardian of Secrets and Champion of Justice & Righteousness

Studying: Maths, 3rd (Final) Year

Paul Griffin

Any student archer will tell you that maths students are the worst at adding up scoresheets after a competition, and Paul is no exception to this rule. As Captain, he has the unenviable task of keeping the rest of us under control, as well as chairing meetings and sacrificing the occasional Mars Bar to the Toucan Gods.

Vice-Captain: Mickie Green

Studying: English with Creative Writing, 3rd (Final) Year

Mickie Green

Mickie is like catnip for nuns (nun-nip? Is that wrong?) and believes all her problems can be solved with tequila. These two “facts” may or may not be related. As Vice-Captain, she has the solemn responsibility of buying club clothing and performing general dogsbody duties for the rest of the committee.

Secretary: Steven Johnson

Studying: PhD Physics — Quantum Optics, 4th Year

Steven Johnson

Steve is a committee veteran, having been Vice-Captain in 2005–06 and Captain in 2006–08, and is also the BUTTS League Organiser and a BUCS SMG member. As the club’s Secretary, he is responsible for taking minutes at committee and club meetings, looking after the paperwork, and other exciting administrative activities. In his spare time, Steve likes to play with lasers.

Treasurer: Elspeth Arthur

Studying: Archaeology and Ancient History, 3rd (Final) Year

Elspeth Arthur

Founder and Chair of the university’s Real Ale Society, Elspeth is also our Treasurer — hopefully she won’t get these roles confused. Her job is to balance our books and extract money from our members whenever (and however) necessary. She sometimes wears a trilby, but she’s quite nice really.

Tournaments Officer: Jonathan Malcolm

Studying: PhD Physics — Atom Interferometry, 1st Year

Jonathan Malcolm

UBAC’s resident northerner, Jon was last seen getting on a plane heading towards continental Europe. Hopefully he will find his way back to Birmingham before the first competition. This is Jon’s third year in the job (“nobody else is stupid enough to do it”) which consists of letting us know where our next competition is, getting us there and back again, and organising any shoots we host.

Equipment Officer: Chris Tombe

Studying: MA Landscape Archaeology, 1st Year

Chris Tombe

In his role as Equipment Officer (which he reprises from last year) Chris is in charge of, well, equipment — buying it, making it, fixing it, or just finding out where it’s mysteriously disappeared to (there’s probably an appropriate archaeology joke to be made here). Be nice to him if you want to use one of our shinier bows.

Social Secretary: Hannah Lake

Studying: MA Medieval History, 2nd (Final) Year

Hannah Lake

Hailing from the proud southern county (and would-be country) of Cornwall, Hannah likes longbows, corsets, and drinking most men under the table. Hannah’s job is to make sure you’re having fun, a responsibility she takes extremely seriously. This will be her third year as (the very social) Social Secretary, but she did take two years off to let other people have a go.

Press Officer: Natalya Fenston

Studying: Classical Literature and Civilisation, 2nd Year

Natalya Fenston

Natalya joined us last year as an experienced horseback archer. She is yet to bring a horse to one of our training sessions, but does sometimes practise by standing on a chair. We normally stand back when that happens. Press Officer is a non-executive position which involves taking lots of photos, writing an occasional newsletter, and generating publicity for the club.

Novice Captain: Camilla Galliers

Studying: Classical Literature and Civilisation, 1st Year

Camilla Galliers

Millie joined us this year as a slightly unhinged arts student. Elected to the Novice Captain position through a one arrow shoot-off, she will no doubt bring her own brand of crazy to the club committee. Her job is to represent her fellow novices at committee meetings (and do whatever mundane tasks her fellow committee members tell her to).

BUCS and BUTTS

Published: 1st March 2012

The BUCS Indoor Championships were held at the Telford International Centre on 18th February. Birmingham’s experienced team (Sarah Russell, Jack Bryant, Allan West, Mickie Green) were one point shy of 2200, finishing in seventh place (out of 41 full teams of four) and bringing home BUCS points for the university. This was a great improvement on last year’s 11th place finish with a score of 2164. The novice team (Allan West, Eloise Cornish, Andrew Cottrell) shot a score of 1523, giving them a fifth place finish. Individual medals were picked up by Sarah Russell (Experienced Ladies Recurve Bronze), Jos Sarsby (Experienced Ladies Barebow Gold), and Allan West (Novice Gents Recurve Gold). Meanwhile, Nottingham put an end to Edinburgh’s decade-long domination of BUCS, setting a new team record of 2298 and a new experienced gents record of 591 for Andrew Randall. Six of the top seven experienced teams were from BUTTS League clubs, once again showing the exceptionally high standard of the league.

The fourth BUTTS Leg was held on 25th February, with Birmingham playing host to Warwick, Loughborough, and Derby. Individual medals on the day went to Jack Bryant (Experienced Gents Recurve Silver), Mickie Green (Experienced Ladies Recurve Gold), Sarah Russell (Experienced Ladies Recurve Bronze), Eloise Cornish (Novice Ladies Recurve Gold), and Alice Fawdry (Novice Ladies Recurve Silver). Birmingham’s experienced team (Jack Bryant, Mickie Green, Paul Griffin, Andrew Iles) scored an impressive 2204 to finish in second place amongst the teams at Birmingham and fourth place overall. The team are in fifth place in the league, separated from fourth and sixth place (Loughborough and Cambridge) on aggregate score. The novice team (Eloise Cornish, Alice Fawdrey, Joe Ingledew, Andrew Cottrell) fared less well, shooting a season’s worst of 1876 to finish in fifth place. They have now been knocked off the top spot in the league by Loughborough, and Cambridge are close behind. The BUTTS Indoor Championships will take place on 17th March, with all teams competing at Loughborough.
