University of Birmingham Archery Club

Joining

We are no longer accepting new members for 2011–12.
Returning members and those currently on the £10 for 5 sessions scheme, please join at the Munrow Centre by 26th October.

We have a stand at the Freshers Sports Fair every year (1–6pm on Wednesday 21st September in the Munrow Sports Centre this year) where you can meet a few members and ask any questions about the sport or the club.

Some of our members at freshers fair.

We also try to organise a free taster session in freshers week each year. This is a friendly get together where you can have a go with a bow and get to know some of our members, so please come along if you are thinking about joining! The taster session will be held on Sunday 25th September this year at our indoor training range in the Gillett Centre on the University’s Selly Oak Campus at 3–6pm. You can meet some of our members under Old Joe (the clock tower) at 2:30pm and we will walk down with you.

We have a vast array of club equipment to suit beginners, so there’s no worry about getting your own stuff, and we have a professional coaching team led by Olympic coach Greig Middleton to help both complete novices (those who’ve never tried the sport before September) as well as more experienced archers.

If you want try out archery (and the club!) you can pay £10 for your first 5 sessions of archery then, if you decide to join, that £10 is deducted from your membership fees. Handy eh? The joining fee for this year is £75 (so £65 for novices after the £10 deduction) plus a £10 Athletic Union (AU) Club Development fee if you’ve not joined any other sports clubs.

The total cost is therefore £85 which includes insurance, AU membership, coaching, and use of our equipment for the year. This must be paid at the Munrow Sports Centre reception (on the university’s main campus) by the end of October.

If you want to join after freshers’ week, just come along to one of our Wednesday sessions and we’ll sort everything out. Unfortunately, we are not able to accept any new members later in the year (after about mid-October) due to our training schedule, but feel free to come along at the start of the next academic year to try your hand at this exciting sport!

If you have any questions, feel free to email us.

Competitions Update

Published: 1st December 2011

The first two BUTTS Legs of the year have been and gone, with Birmingham competing at Loughborough University on 19th November and Warwick University a week later.

Our novice team is off to an excellent start, with the second highest score at the first leg (1890, just 5 points below Cambridge’s winning score) and finishing first at the second leg, with a fantastic score of 1919. At both legs, the novice team was made up of Allan West, Lewis Clark, Eloise Cornish, and Joe Ingledew, who also picked up five individual medals between them across the two legs. Birmingham currently sits at the top of the novice table.

The experienced team have got off to a slower start, with their scores of 2149 and 2150 putting them ahead of only Derby and Nottingham Trent’s teams. The experienced team comprised Jack Bryant, Mickie Green, and Steven Johnson at both legs, as well as Sarah Russell at Loughborough, and Tom Sherwood at Warwick. Experienced individual medals have been won by Mickie Green (Ladies Recurve bronze at Loughborough), Jos Sarsby (Barebow silver at Warwick), and Hannah Lake (Longbow gold at Warwick).

Full results can be found, as always, on the BUTTS League website. The next BUTTS Leg will be held at Derby University on 4th February.
