BUTTS League
The BUTTS Challenge League was formed in 1995 and now consists of eight university archery clubs:
Each university hosts a leg of the competition in the first or second term, with teams from four universities attending each leg. Medals are awarded for individual and team scores in experienced and novice categories at each leg.
Two legs are held are held on the same day (or as close as possible) so that every team is competing simultaneously. The highest scoring experienced and novice teams at each complementary pair of legs receive 8 points, the second place teams get 7 points, and so on. Each team meets every other team twice throughout the year, apart from one team which they do not meet at any leg. The pairs of teams which do not meet are selected based on the experienced team results from the previous year in order to minimise the effect on individual placings and medals. For 2010-11, Birmingham will not meet Loughborough at any BUTTS leg.
The BUTTS Indoor Championships are held at the end of the second term with all clubs attending. Again, the winning teams receive 8 points, second place teams get 7 points, and so on. The experienced and novice teams with the most points at the end of the season are declared the League Champions and are awarded the League Trophies. In 2010, the Indoor Championships were combined with a formal(ish) social, the BUTTS Ball.
The BUTTS Outdoor Championships are held in the third term with medals and trophies awarded to the top experienced and novice teams and individuals. Later in the third term, a friendly outdoor competition is held.
Boat Racing
The Boat Race is a long held BUTTS League tradition: after shooting, teams of four archers each drink a pint of their preferred beverage, one after the other. The team to finish drinking and sit down first is declared the winner.
In 2008, official rules were written and a Boat Race Trophy was awarded for the first time at both the Indoor and Outdoor BUTTS Championships.

Competitions Update
Published: 1st December 2011
The first two BUTTS Legs of the year have been and gone, with Birmingham competing at Loughborough University on 19th November and Warwick University a week later.
Our novice team is off to an excellent start, with the second highest score at the first leg (1890, just 5 points below Cambridge’s winning score) and finishing first at the second leg, with a fantastic score of 1919. At both legs, the novice team was made up of Allan West, Lewis Clark, Eloise Cornish, and Joe Ingledew, who also picked up five individual medals between them across the two legs. Birmingham currently sits at the top of the novice table.
The experienced team have got off to a slower start, with their scores of 2149 and 2150 putting them ahead of only Derby and Nottingham Trent’s teams. The experienced team comprised Jack Bryant, Mickie Green, and Steven Johnson at both legs, as well as Sarah Russell at Loughborough, and Tom Sherwood at Warwick. Experienced individual medals have been won by Mickie Green (Ladies Recurve bronze at Loughborough), Jos Sarsby (Barebow silver at Warwick), and Hannah Lake (Longbow gold at Warwick).
Full results can be found, as always, on the BUTTS League website. The next BUTTS Leg will be held at Derby University on 4th February.
